He completed graduation and post-graduation in Law from Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, and The Kerala Law Academy College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Early Life and Career
He started his career as a Sev Dal worker in Congress Party. He was selected for the posts of District Chairman and State Chief of Kerala Sev Dal.
In 1989 he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Calicut Constituency in general elections and in 1991 he won the general election by defeating the Janata Dal leader M P Veerendra Kumar.
In the 1996’s general elections, he lost his seat to M P Veerendra Kumar and failed to get the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat.
Then in 1999, he won the Kozhikode seat by defeating the Janata Dal national leader C M Ibrahim.
Later he was selected as the General Secretary and Vice President of the Kerala Congress Committee (KPCC). From 2001-2004 he was elected as the President of KPCC.
And he was selected as the Minister of Power but he was not elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 2004.
He was elected to the Member of Legislative Assembly in 2011, from Vattiyoorkavu Constituency by defeating the leader Cherian Philip.
In 2016 he was again elected as the MLA of Vattiyoorkavu Constituency by defeating Kummanam Rajasekharan, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Vatakara Constituency by defeating P Jayarajan, the leader of the Communist Party of India in 2019.
