In a significant move to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare on its citizens, the Union Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing medical expenses for every individual. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized this dedication, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, especially for economically weaker sections. This initiative aims to ensure that quality medical services are within reach for all, minimizing out-of-pocket expenditures that often lead to financial distress.
A cornerstone of this commitment is the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), launched in 2018. This flagship scheme provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, targeting over 10 crore families across the nation. The program covers a wide range of medical treatments, ensuring that beneficiaries receive cashless and paperless access to services at empaneled public and private hospitals. To date, more than 4 crore citizens have benefited from PM-JAY, receiving treatments without the looming worry of financial hardship.
In a recent expansion of the scheme, the Union Cabinet approved the inclusion of all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their income. This decision, made on September 11, 2024, is set to benefit approximately 6 crore senior citizens, providing them with free health insurance coverage under PM-JAY. This move underscores the government’s focus on safeguarding the health and well-being of the elderly population, recognizing their vulnerability and the escalating medical costs they often face.
Complementing these efforts, the government has also been promoting the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), which aims to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices through dedicated outlets known as Janaushadhi Kendras. This initiative addresses the high cost of medications, ensuring that essential drugs are available to all sections of society at reasonable prices. By increasing the number of these centers nationwide, the government strives to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure on medicines, which constitutes a significant portion of healthcare costs.
